Five years ago, at their son’s request to add a dog to the family, Kelly and her husband Jim mutually agreed that if they were going to expand the family, then this newest member had to satisfy a few requirements. In particular, this dog needed to be athletic enough to hike with Kelly in challenging terrain, possess the endurance and speed to run with their son, and have the versatility to travel and hunt with Jim. The puppy that fit the bill was a German Shorthaired Pointer named Sage. What was not expected was the challenge that came with adjusting to life with a GSP. Kelly had been introduced to the bird dog world several years back, while watching Jim train with their Labrador to become an AKC Master Hunter. However, raising a GSP was different. As they struggled to locate helpful resources, Kelly delved head-first into learning as much as possible on how to train and bring out the best in their newest bird dog. In the process, she fell in love with both the breed and upland hunting. The time investment paid off, and Kelly is constantly amazed at the focus, work ethic, and drive Sage possesses in the field contrasted with the fun-loving calm she brings to their home. Sage is everything the Robinsons had hoped for, but the work to get there was not lost on them.
Kelly wished to become a part of the Bird Dog Society to help develop and distribute more extensive and organized resources available to bird dog owners and to help others experience the special relationship particular to bird dogs. Kelly feels blessed to be a part of the bird dog community and recognizes the many skilled trainers and owners that have been generous with their time and direction; it is a truly amazing community, to which she wants to give back. The Robinsons have participated in AKC hunt tests, NAVHDA testing, and dock diving, and they train regularly on preserve grounds in North Carolina and Virginia. Kelly and Jim love to travel, and incorporate the pursuit of wild birds as often as possible, most recently in Kansas, Arkansas, and North Dakota.
